From Cader Dement's collection of books, we can theorize that he was an educated person even if it was self-learned. His grandson, Cader Dement b. 1830 was a medical doctor in Stoddard Co. MO. His nephew Dr. John Jefferson Dement b. 1830 was a surgeon in Madison Co. AL Cader's youngest son, Dr. David Hall Dement b.1828, was a doctor in Yazoo Co. MS.
Books listed at the sale of the property of Cader Dement's estate.
1 lot of Books
Conversations on Chimistry [sic]
1 Dictionary
Bottys History
3 Books of Sermons
1 History of the U States
Gunn Medical book
4 Books
Ewels medical B.
1 lot of old books
3 lots of books
I don't know how much is in a "lot of books" but I would think it would be at least 4 or more books; or maybe a wooden boxfull.
Then the most important book of all.....
1 Family Bible
Youngest son, Dr. David Hall Dement, bought the family bible. He died 5 Feb 1874. Recently, I have learned that two daughters survived who have descendents living today. It is certainly a dream that perhaps their grandfather's bible is safely treasured by a family member awaiting to be revealed.
Dawn,
ReplyDeleteI am trying to get some help researching Dement...I tried posting here already but in case it didn't work, I'm aordung@charter.net
Reading thru Rutherford Co TN Deeds and found one that mentioned Cader Dement. There are a group of DNA testers who are descendants of Reuban Dement who somehow connect thru my PGM's Sutton, Morrow and Craig folks. The deed for Cader is at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS4R-MQLQ-H?i=22&cat=358486 You'll need to be logged on to FamilySearch to view but it should prompt you.--Marie
